Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are among the brand new teams in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, yet they have seen such a rapid rise. In 2022 and 2023, the team finished in third place; in 2024, they would look to win the trophy.
And for that, they will expect their overseas players to perform well. Who are the game changers for overseas players in LSG? In this blog, we will delve into the profiles of the eight LSG overseas players.
Comprehensive List of LSG Overseas Players in the IPL
When the auction ended, LSG had picked up 25 players, of whom eight were overseas. Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran, and Marcus Stoinis are key overseas players in the squad. Here’s a complete list of RCB overseas players:
- Quinton de Kock
- Nicholas Pooran
- Marcus Stoinis
- Kyle Mayers
- Naveen-ul-Haq
- David Willey
- Shamar Joseph
- Ashton Turner
We look at each of the overseas players closely:
Quinton de Kock:
One of the most consistent performers in IPL history, Quinton de Kock, was bought for ₹6.75 crore by LSG in 2022. He repaid the faith by slamming 508 runs in 15 games at a strike rate of 149. De Kock, also an excellent wicketkeeper, got limited opportunities in 2023 but was retained ahead of 2024. However, with Mayer’s resurgence, his chances are expected to be limited.
Nicholas Pooran:
Nicholas Pooran was a masterstroke purchase by LSG in 2023. The franchise paid him ₹16 crore at the auction, making him the most expensive LSG overseas player. The 28-year-old slammed 358 runs in 15 games at a strike rate of 173. At Lucknow, he has turned himself into a match-winning finisher who can level the run rate in the face of tremendous pressure.
Marcus Stoinis:
At ₹9.20 crore, Marcus Stoinis was among the players LSG signed ahead of the 2022 mega auction. The Aussie is known for his power-hitting lower down the order. He can also be a handy medium pacer at the death. One of the instances is his heroics against KKR in the 2022 season, where his crafty bowling helped his team beat KKR by just two runs. He scored 408 runs last season and picked up five wickets.
Kyle Mayers:
Kyle Mayers, bought for ₹50 lakhs in 2022 by LSG, was retained at the same price for the next season. An opening batter in T20, Mayers can be fierce through the offside. This ability was on full display in 2023, when he scored 379 runs in 13 games with a strike rate of 144. Mayers is expected to open the innings for LSG in 2024 as well.
Naveen-ul-Haq:
Known mainly for his public spat with Virat Kohli, Naveen-ul-Haq is a classy pacer whose slingshot action generates extra yards of pace. He played eight games in 2023, picking up 11 wickets with a personal best of 4/38. The Afghan youngster, roped in ₹50 lakhs in the 2023 auction, will have to stand up to the high hopes of LSG fans.
David Willey:
The English all-rounder will have to prove his match fitness in the upcoming season. Already ruled out of two IPL seasons, David Willey never played more than four games in any season. The 34-year-old was ruled out of 2022 and 2023 due to a toe injury, meaning he played just 11 games in his entire IPL career. He will return to IPL action after having been bought for ₹2 crore by LSG.
Shamar Joseph:
Shamar Joseph replaced Mark Wood in the RCB roster after the England pacer was ruled out of the tournament. Joseph was shot to fame following his sensational spell at Gabba, which helped West Indies achieve a historic Test victory on Australian soil just last month. The 24-year-old, who once worked as a security guard, played his first professional game in 2023. With an IPL deal worth ₹3 crore, life has come full circle for the fast bowler.
Ashton Turner:
The Australian player had played just four games in the IPL, and that too in 2019. But in 2024, Ashton Turner will be back in action and face pressure to avoid repeating the mistakes of 2019, where he registered three ducks. Turner can be the second overseas finisher at LSG who can smash the ball cleanly when the run rate rises. He was bought for ₹1 crore in the IPL 2024 auction.
