Delhi Capitals (DC) used to be Delhi Daredevils once, but since the takeover by the new owners, the franchise has shown tremendous growth. It was in 2019 that Delhi Daredevils became Delhi Capitals, and the franchise went into the Playoffs in the first season.
In 2020, the team reached the final and again played in the playoffs in the following season. However, last season, they finished ninth under the leadership of David Warner, as the team went on to win only five out of 14 games.
The prime reason for their success in the 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons is the combination of overseas players; this year, too, they have picked a solid line-up of overseas players. This blog will look at the overseas players at DC in the IPL 2024 season.
Comprehensive List of DC Overseas Players in IPL 2024
The franchise bought West Indies ODI captain Shai Hope, England batter Harry Brook, South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs, and Aussie pacer Jhye Richardson. However, Brook had to withdraw due to personal reasons. Meanwhile, Lungi Ngidi was replaced by Jake Fraser-McGurk. Here’s the list of DC overseas players in the IPL 2024 season.
- David Warner
- Anrich Nortje
- Mitchell Marsh
- Tristan Stubbs
- Jhye Richardson
- Jake Fraser-McGurk
- Shai Hope
We look at each of the DC overseas players closely:
David Warner:
One of the most consistent and ruthless IPL batters of all time, Warner has a plethora of IPL achievements. He has won the Orange Cap thrice and led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to the title in 2016. However, despite the accolades, he was let go unceremoniously by SRH, and he was snapped up by the Delhi Capitals for ₹6.25 crore in 2022. He belted 432 runs and 516 runs in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. With retention in 2024, he is expected to fulfill the role of the most reliable overseas batter at the franchise.
Anrich Nortje:
Replacing Chris Woakes at Delhi Capitals in 2020, Anrich Nortje made a stunning debut, picking 22 wickets. The following year, he picked up 12 wickets. Bought at ₹50 lakh in 2020, he was retained ahead of the mega auction for ₹6.5 crore. He will be back in the IPL this season with a renewed hope of bettering his performance in his debut season for Delhi.
Mitchell Marsh:
Mitchell Marsh is the leading overseas all-rounder for the Capitals. He was bought for ₹6.5 crore in 2022. Marsh scored 251 runs in eight matches in his first season with the Delhi outfit. However, his performance dipped in 2023, when he scored just 128 runs in nine matches. However, he took 12 wickets. It’s high time that the 32-year-old lives up to the expectations of being one of the best modern-day all-rounders.
Tristan Stubbs:
An aggressive wicketkeeper-cum-batter, Tristan Stubbs, was drafted into the Mumbai Indians roster after Tymal Mills was ruled out in IPL 2022. The youngster, who hit a triple hundred in the CSA 4-Day Series, made only four appearances for Mumbai Indians in two seasons. He was let go by MI before the 2024 auction, and DC snapped him up for ₹50 lakhs.
Jhye Richardson:
Bought by Punjab Kings for a massive ₹14 crore in 2021, Jhye Richardson played just three matches in his maiden IPL season. In 2022, he was ruled out due to an injury and missed out on the 2023 season for Mumbai Indians. In the 2024 season, the Aussie gets another opportunity to prove his IPL credentials.
Shai Hope:
One of the most consistent batters for West Indies, Shai Hope, was considered too slow for the IPL. Thankfully for him, that image has changed a bit. After going unsold in the last two auctions, he was finally bought for ₹75 lakh. He can open the batting or bat at 3. But provided the many options available, he might be the backup and maybe warming the bench for Delhi Capitals this season.
Jake Fraser-McGurk:
Jake Fraser-McGurk will replace South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi, who has been ruled out of IPL 2024 with an injury. He is an all-rounder and has represented Australia in two ODIs. The 21-year-old had a decent ILT20, where he scored 109 runs in three innings with an individual best of 54. He has also regularly featured in the Big Bash League, accounting for 536 runs in 32 innings for Melbourne Renegades.
