Chennai Super Kings (CSK) survived a scare as they managed to hold off Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Chepauk to register their first win in IPL 2023.

Riding on classy knocks from Ruturaj Gaikwad (57 off 31 balls) and Devon Conway (47 off 29 balls), CSK had managed to post a mammoth total of 217/7 on board. Nevertheless, in reply, LSG gave the hosts a run for the money as Kyle Mayers (53 off 22 balls) and Nicholas Pooran (32 off 18 balls) almost threatened to take the game away. However, CSK spinners-Moeen Ali (4/26) and Mitchell Santner (1/21) managed to apply the brakes, eventually helping CSK to a close 12-run win.

LSG had won the toss and opted to field first, and the decision backfired as Gaikwad and Conway gave CSK a brilliant start. Both added 110 runs for the first wicket. Both the batters were harsh on LSG pacers. For instance, Gaikwad took on Mark Wood in his very first over, hitting him for 4,4 and 6. Moreover, he also targeted Krishanppa Gowtham, hammering him for 20 runs in the over.

In reply, LSG gave CSK a run for the money thanks to some poor bowling upfront. String of no-balls and wides also helped LSG’s cause. As a result, LSG got a solid opening stand worth 79 runs in just five overs. Anything with the width was hammered by Mayers before he was caught off Moeen Ali. After this point, Lucknow started to lose timely wickets, Although, Pooran tried his best to pull off a heist but Ali alongside Santner applied the brakes on LSG.
Result
With run rate increasing, LSG couldn’t maintain the scoring rate, resulting in a CSK win by 12 runs.
Moeen Ali was eventually adjudged Man of the Match.
