IPL 2023 auction was one of the most exciting auctions in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sam Curran emerged as the most expensive player in IPL, while Cameron Green, Ben Stokes, Nicholas Pooran, and Harry Brook ignited a bidding war.
IPL 2023 Auction – The Top 3 Buys
The auction for the 16th edition saw franchises snapping up a few talented and big-name overseas players. Three England players – Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, and Harry Brook – became millionaires. Cameron Green and the explosive Nicholas Pooran fetched more than Rs 15 crore.
Sam Curran – Punjab Kings (Rs 18.5 crore): The England all-rounder, who won the player of the tournament award in the T20 World Cup 2022, became the most expensive player in IPL history. Six franchises fought for Curran’s signature, and Punjab Kings finally landed their former player for a record Rs 18.5 crore.
Cameron Green – Mumbai Indians (Rs 17.5 crore): Cameron Green was touted to be a big buy in the IPL auction after his stellar show with the bat in the T20I series in India. Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals were locked in a battle for the Aussie. The five-time champions, who had a bigger cash purse than the other two, sealed the deal for Rs 17.5 crore – the second-highest purchase in IPL ever.
Ben Stokes – Chennai Super Kings (Rs 16.25 crore): The England Test captain became an IPL millionaire for the third time. Chennai Super Kings fought off interest from Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants to sign Stokes for Rs 16.25 crore. The Englishman also became the franchise’s most expensive capture surpassing Deepak Chahar’s record of Rs 14 crore.
IPL 2023 Auction Players – Pooran in demand again
Nicholas Pooran’s stock rose despite an average outing with the bat in 2022. The dashing left-handed batter was signed for Rs 10.75 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad last season. Lucknow Super Giants bought Pooran for Rs 16 crore, and the Caribbean wicket-keeper batsman will join the likes of KL Rahul, Quinton de Kock, Marcus Stoinis, etc.
IPL 2023 Auction Players – Brook the Millionaire
England middle-order batsman Harry Brook became the first millionaire of the IPL 2023 auction thanks to Sunrisers Hyderabad splashing Rs 13.25 crore for the 23-year-old. He emerged the player of the series in England’s three-match Test series against Pakistan and produced a string of impressive knocks for England in T20Is in 2022.
IPL 2023 Auction – Domestic Buys, Little, & Wiese
Mayank Agarwal, Shivam Mavi, and Mukesh Kumar were the top three Indian buys in IPL 2023 Auction. Sunrisers Hyderabad paid Rs 8.25 crore to secure the services of Mayank Agarwal, who captained Punjab Kings in the last IPL season. Meanwhile, Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar were snapped up by Gujarat Titans (Rs 6 crore) and Delhi Capitals (Rs 5.5 crore), respectively.
Josh Little and David Wiese put Ireland and Namibia on the IPL map. Gujarat Titans bought Little, who took a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup 2022 , for Rs 4.4 crore. The left-arm seamer will become the first Ireland cricketer to be part of the world’s biggest T20 league. Wiese is set to be the first Namibian international to be part of the IPL after Kolkata Knight Riders roped him in for Rs 1 crore.
